The standard dose for donation is 450 ml of blood (approximately 10% of the total volume), while 200-250 mg of iron is removed from the body, while with a normal diet, about 1 mg of iron is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. After donating blood, it can be donated again no earlier than 60 days later (the maximum permissible number of blood donations per year for men is 5 times, for women - 4). It may take up to 6 months to replenish the resulting iron deficiency. Regular blood donation, on the one hand, often leads to the development of iron deficiency anemia, and on the other hand, decrease in hemoglobin content <130 g / l in men and <120 g / l in women is the basis for temporary withdrawal of the donor.
Increasing the interval between donations prevents the development of iron deficiency anemia. To prevent anemia, all donors should be encouraged to increase their intake of foods containing iron. Although diet is not considered an effective method for correcting iron deficiency and treating iron deficiency anemia, because of the limited absorption of iron in the gastrointestinal tract, even with increased intake of it with food (maximum absorption of iron is only 2.5-3 mg / day). In order to replenish iron stores, replacement therapy with iron preparations is indicated.
